Perky -- Gotcha Day

It is amazing to think that it was 5 years ago today that Perk came into our lives. We have had our ups and downs and a few scars along the way ... but he was worth every single one ...
He is quite a character and a real chatterbox. I always knew there was a gentle grey behind that lunge. LOL
I couldn't imagine our home without him ... I'm sure it would be much quieter ... but who needs quiet?
Happy Gotcha Day Perk!

Perk's Progress
In the past, he has had very little out of cage time -- He is now not only coming out with just learning step up ... but he plays with foot toys and his hanging toys on top of his cage ...
He was never clipped and can't seem to fly .. so we are very careful with his out of cage time. He panics and flies around erratically so we are having a hard time working with him. I think we will need to clip him or we won't be able to work with him. He is lunging and biting and isn't trusting us and flies off ..
We have to buy a carrier to get him to the vet to have him clipped .. hopefully next week. We don't want to traumatize him so we will see how he is doing.
He was eating a mixture of sunflower seeds, peanuts and a bunch of other seeds .... Can you believe he is eating Hagen Lifetime Pellets for Parrots ... and tropimix! He loves it ... just tonight he kept his head in the bowl for 10 minutes!
I am so impressed with this birds progress ... he is so perceptive to all physical changes ... but still lunges and bites!
I know .. one day at a time!

Perky - CAG
Today was a big day in our lives ... we adopted a Congo African Grey Parrot named Perky.
Perky is 22 years old and has had the same owner for 20 of his 22 years. We had thought this would be a difficult adjustment for him and we were not only prepared for the challenge but intended to make the adjustment as easy as possible for him.
We also have a quaker parrot named Sméagol and kept Perky under quarantine for about three weeks. We felt this was a good approach for health reasons but also allowed Perky to adjust to his new surroundings and people before introducing him to King Sméagol.
His first day was better then I expected. He seemed a little cautious but not nervous. He was eating and drinking and had about 5 minutes out of cage time. So we were pleased and felt we were off to a great start.
I was thinking this evening that our lives have forever changed ... but that's a good thing!
